Working

Featured

I think I have been lucky in that in the last 25 years I have really enjoyed what I do for a living, If you don’t like your job than your not going to be happy. Think about it, you spend half your waking hours at work so you better like what you do for a living.

Don’t get me wrong, I have had plenty of jobs that I didn’t like, but when I was in that situation I always worked hard to get out of it and find something I did enjoy doing.

To enjoy working for me means having an end product. Sometimes that product is more clear than other times but you can feel it when it;s there.

I had a job that had me helping other people get their jobs done quicker and if I did well – they did well, That was my end product.- when they did well because I helped them get there.

I moved on from there to being the one doing the projects and the end product was easier to to see because I could see the machine run at the end of the job.

Now I am hoping to get a position where I check others to make sure that the product they installed is up to standards. If I get that job my end result will still be seeing a machine run at the end, ( even though I didn’t install it)  I will know that it is running as well as it possibly can. Continue reading

TRAVEL

I love to travel as I think most people do. Traveling is great because you get to see how other people live. You see how they work, play, what they enjoy, what is important to them, what their politics are.

My favorite thing to do while traveling is to see what the local folks eat and drink. My wife and I went to Barbados and had a driver take us to the center of the island (where the local people live) and stop at a restaurant for lunch. We sat down and ordered two rum and cokes (local drink) and looked at the menu on the chalk board.

The woman brought us a big bowl of ice cubes, two half pint bottles of rum, and two 16oz. returnable bottles of Coke! Wow! We ordered the lunch special and sat back to drink our bottles of rum and looked around. We had one guy passed out on a chair in the corner and two guys playing dominoes at a table.

Our waitress brought us two plates with what must have been one pound of pork hocks and a large portion of fried bread fruit.I grew up eating pork hocks and I thought they were great but the bread fruit was pretty bland. My wife had some bread fruit but did not touch the pork hocks  (she had never seen anything like it).

Little memories of things like this are what make traveling so great. Whenever you go somewhere that you have never been before, you just have to try some local food to get the flavor of the area.

Family

MY BROTHER

I have a brother that had a stroke many years ago. He has gone from barely living on his own to needing assistants to being in a bed at all times and not being able to go to the bathroom by himself.

When I talk to him on the the phone he is not always easy to understand but we know each other well enough that I can usually finish sentences for him.

It always amazes me how he can still give me so much wisdom even though he is trapped in that bed

You see he is forced to live in his mind and his memory and not the day to day that we live in. That can give him an advantage of not having the here and now get in his way! He can look back at his life and see things clearly without the here and now to cloud his memory.

I asked him tonight if he thought life “sucks” and he said no.. he just takes it one day at a time and what ever happens ..happens.

I think that 99% of the people in the US have a better life than he does but he has a better attitude than most of the people out there.

I asked him what helped him get this attitude and he told me when he was still on his own he would run and think and run and think.

He literally ran for hours and would just think while he was running.

I can’t do this because my knees are shot but I can find something  close that will do for me what running did for him.

I hope anyone reading this can find their “thing” that will work for them too and let us know how we can make our lives better in the process.

If we can share we can all win!

FOOD !

You couldn’t talk long about things that make you feel good without the topic of food being brought up. I feel there is a Catch 22 with food because most food that tastes good isn’t good for you.

We also have time issues, everyone is busy so you do not have time to cook meals that are good for you. So you can eat your meals at a restaurant, end up weighing 400 pounds with clogged arteries, or spend time you can’t really afford to prepare your own meals.

I hope we can come up with a happy medium for this issue. If we can work together maybe we can come up with some meals that are quick and easy so that they can be made at home in the limited time we have. It would be good if the recipes are somewhat good for you but comfort food does make us feel good too!

I’ll start with one that should be fairly nutritious.

Cut tortillas into roughly 2 inch pieces.  Fry in hot oil until crispy. Spread on refried beans and put in single layer on cookie sheet. Cover with shredded Mexican  cheese add a dollop of salsa and bake until cheese is melted.

Try this and see if you like it. Then please post a recipe of your own!

George Burns and Gaming

Everyone loves gaming these days. The last computer game I played was Pong which most people probably don’t even remember.

I would guess though if millions of people are doing it, it must be pretty cool.

All I can say since I really don’t know that much about it is have fun but remember what George Burns said…

“EVERYTHING IN MODERATION … INCLUDING MODERATION”

So have fun!

My life off the court has changed. I’m feeling good inside, so I guess it shows on the outside too.

I’d rather be a failure at something I love than a success at something I hate.

PETS

I think pets are one of best things to make you feel happy. I get home and the dogs act like they haven’t seen me in a year. The tails are going, the tongues are going and they just could not be happier ( I think there is something to to learned right there).

I go inside and sit down and the cats come up purring because they want a pet. If it is so easy for our pets to be happy why is it so hard for us? We have so many issues to deal with and bills to pay, deadlines to meet.

When I go out to throw the ball for my four Labradors they are very competitive but one comes back with the ball. the others are there with tails wagging and barking (throw it again Dad). They are so happy it makes me feel like a kid again.

That is very important because “when I feel like a kid again” it means I am very happy. Anything that makes you “feel like a kid again” is very good for you! (The dogs love it too)

Anyway, my point is try to be a kid again any way you can think of. It doesn’t matter what it is or what other people may think. If it makes you feel good go ahead and do it!
